Merilyn Chaffee – Vice President of Operations/Pilot
When you grow up in a family of aviators, chances are high you’ll become one too. Merilyn’s mom, dad, and brothers are all pilots. In high school, her dad bought a kit plane that came in a box, and the family put it together in the downstairs garage.
Merilyn learned to fly from her oldest brother who was a flight instructor. She got her private pilot’s license when she was 17 and loved flying so much that in college she majored in aviation, flight, and maintenance. Merilyn has a Bachelor of Technology degree from Andrews University, a commercial pilot’s license, a flight instructor certificate, and an A&P rating.
Based in California, Merilyn has volunteered as a pilot for five years.
How did you get involved with Dream Flights?
I was flight instructing at the Santa Rosa Airport and Darryl was giving Dream Flights there. A mutual friend introduced us and after seeing the magic and the smiles I was hooked. Flying the Stearman with someone who trained in one 75 years ago is such an honor. I love hearing the stories and seeing the living history.
Q: What keeps you continuing to volunteer?
A: Our Dream Flyers. They’re such amazing people!
Q: For people who have never flown in a Stearman, is flying in a Stearman really windy?
A: I love that you don’t need to check the weather when you’re flying in the Stearman. You’re well aware!
Q: Do veterans ever ask you to fly aerobatics?
A: Yes!
Q: Any advice for the first-time Dream Flyer?
A: We can’t wait to meet you and honor you with a Dream Flight. Come and enjoy! It’s an amazing experience that will literally have you flying high.
